Dear Grade 5,
These will be your last projects as a cohort, but will hopefully inspire years of creativity in the future. Your commitment to completing these artworks to the best of your ability was easy to see. Many of you chose to create with materials you loved or with a subject matter in mind that was close to your heart. Those projects ran themselves. You have demonstrated that student choice drives learning.
All the best as you head into your PYP Exhibition! I cannot wait to see what you come up with over the next few weeks!
ACT: A Community Tapestry
Hiya, Grade 5!
In order to contribute to the new collaborative project we were creating, you were presented with three questions: How can we represent our host/home country, how can we share our goals, hopes and dreams, and how can we show what our school is all about???
Your contributions were well-received. As the last class to add into the final design, you responded to and reflected upon the grade levels before you. You took their ideas and made connections to your ideas, imbedding imagery into our tapestry that communicates what it means to be part of our community. Pretty impressive! Well hello, Grade 5s!!!
Welcome to your Exhibition year...the beginning of the end of your PYP experience! I'm so looking forward to learning more about you and your many interests. Looking back through the years in your Gallery inspires me and I cannot wait to see what your personal projects will entail.
As part of the school-wide Who we are unit of inquiry, we are building our skills to create a massive wall loom using a variety of fibers and fiber arts techniques. Your original first projects are unique and colorful. Your contributions to the final design are apparent. You are leaders in the Primary School, and it shows.
Hey, Grade 4!
We are just about to move forward into a TAB approach to understanding the principles and elements of art. I’m so excited to see what you dream up! Your last project was finished in the nick of time…a lovely show for our Arts Celebration. You gained a deeper understanding of the concept of causation as you created an image showing the result of natural phenomena and human activity on landforms around the globe. Some of you created split screens while others painted the fronts and backs of boards to finish a 3D, freestanding artwork. Check these out in the Gallery.

Hello, Grade 4.
I’ll not be able to address you in this way soon. Grade 5 is on the horizon…a little over a month to go. How wonderful it was to have Alex Face, Thai Street Artist, come and create with us. This was a perfect time to explore your How we express ourselves unit of inquiry. Many of you were star-struck when you met Alex for the first time. His artwork can be seen all over the world and if you are a frequent visitor to Bangkok, it would be highly likely that you would see something there.
Alex shared his ideas and reasons for creating. He told us about his past experiences and how he has changed over the years. You asked meaningful questions and delved into his art form with enthusiasm. What a treat!
Challenge vs Opportunity
Well, well, well, Grade 4!
This idea of challenge and opportunity led the two classrooms in completely different directions. One class wanted to do printing and the other wanted to work with masks. No Problem!!!
Actually, there was a bit of a problem. The classes were on completely different timetables. Half of Grade 4 finished their artwork in half of the time. In the end, it all worked our alright. One class started an artwork using a dotting technique and the other will catch up with that as they finish their next project.
Many of you decided to do a split-screen kind of idea. Whether it was on a mask or etched in for a print, your ideas became more complex as you created. Some students even challenged the idea of challenge VS opportunity, claiming that challenges are opportunities!!

We are off and running with the Mosaic Mural. As per my expectation, you've contributed with style! Here is a little time-lapse video for you to enjoy. You will have more opportunities to work on the mural over the next week. It is so exciting to see everything come together!
Understanding 'The Arts'
Dear Grade 4 and Grade 5,
We had lots of interesting discussions with Ms Julie when we explored and inquired into The Arts. You learned that there are many BRANCHES of The Arts and that artists contribute to society in a variety of ways.
Some artists that you researched had challenging lives and made mistakes. Some were heroes that saved lives and others were reclusive and hid from life's challenges. What we discovered was that either way, for whatever reason, artists influenced the people and places around them.
In order to create a visual representation of our learning, we designed a tree that symbolized The Arts and its many branches. You contributed to the project by designing and producing 'Did you know?' posters with important facts about artists ranging from Julie Andrews to Picasso!

With a career spanning 25 years, I have worked alongside children from infancy to 9th grade in a generalist classroom setting. To my delight and surprise, an opportunity arose for me to become an art teacher in 2015. My first year was a learning experience and I expect that will be the case with all the years to follow.
