What can artists do to reduce waste on the planet?

Well, hello, Grade 2!

We have been grappling with this idea of 'waste' for weeks. As artists, we use materials to create. How are artists part of the problem? How do schools contribute to this issue of 'over production'? What can we do to change? to reduce what goes to the landfill? to reduce what gets made in the first place?

During one of our discussions, we were talking about how we create and use 'things'. Things can be materials like glue, paint, paper, clay, canvas, and so on as far as you can imagine. Things can also be tools like staplers, glue guns, pencils, paintbrushes and on and on again!

For the first part of your project work with these ideas, we challenged you to create an artwork with only glue and paper...old, scrappy, left-for-trash paper! It was clean, but was in weird shapes and completely unwanted. This challenged you to rethink the elements of art, especially shape and color.

Stay-tuned for the next step, as you grow your understanding of the value and cost of things!

With a career spanning 25 years, I have worked alongside children from infancy to 9th grade in a generalist classroom setting. To my delight and surprise, an opportunity arose for me to become an art teacher in 2015. My first year was a learning experience and I expect that will be the case with all the years to follow.
