Sa bai dee, Grade 3!

In preparation for our HUGE ceramic tiled mosaic mural (wow, that's a mouthful), you have been making paper mosaics to learn about how color, shape and space help the audience of an artwork make meaning. If your image is not defined by these elements of art, you require your viewers to work hard to find the message in your piece.

Your individual paper mosaics are nearly finished. Check out the slideshow below to see your process so far...

Salutations, Grade 2!

Now we are talking about changing the world!! Who knew trash could be such fun!?!? We spent a great deal of time on this project and learned so very much. The connections that we made were with the help of your classroom teachers and also Ms Julie from Performing Arts. From concepts to creating to workshops to sharing, this was an amazing journey of discovery and creativity.

Giving life to discarding items, creating small group performances and discovering how to communicate big ideas through The Arts helped you to feel empowered. It was wonderful to watch you grow and learn!

The Sounds of Silence: Grade 2 One World Day - DVD Weaving

Salutations, Grade 2!

Amazing work, once again. After you were so keen on weaving, we inquired into a few projects we could do to celebrate our One World Day event. We looked through so many ideas on how we could reuse materials and found one that captured our attention from a weaving stand point as well.

We used old DVDs as a frame to hold the warp of our weavings. Some of you chose HOT colours and others, COLD colours. Some were downright icy! In the end, all were beautiful in their silence, spinning and reflecting on how we treat our world.

The creative process in action!

Salutations, Grade 2.

As a mini, day project, between projects, you learned about the process of weaving. Some of you were off and away working magic with the weft and the warp, while others found it a bit confusing about whether you should go over or under the warp. It is hard sometimes to know. If you get stuck when you try this at home, just check out this refresher video...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opUOb0knagU ... thank you Mrs Brown!! :0)

What I was most impressed by was the creativity you showed after you finished your page of weaving. Some of you made patterns with drawings, others created purses, while still others made cylinders or birthday cards. Limitless possibilities!!

Love it!

UBUNTU

Hello All, We have had a huge discussion across grade levels and classrooms about what UBUNTU means. Here is an account of what we discussed and how we, as a school, designed a collaborative visual expression to display.

UBUNTU: An ancient African word expressing…I am because we are.

When given the concept of UBUNTU to explore, students from Prep to Grade 5 unpacked and analyzed what this idea meant to them. They viewed images and videos, explored the symbolism of unity and had small and whole group discussions that eventually built a unique, collective perspective.

Through collaborations, students added to each other’s understandings. They shared messages between classes and an inquiry was developed. Why are we who we are? The answers grew into a new thought, ‘I am me because of the people who are around me.’

The ideas of appreciation, influence and inspiration began to bubble up along with new questions…
Who has shaped me?
How do I demonstrate their influence?
How do I share my ideas visually?

With these questions came possibilities and ways to communicate their new understandings of UBUNTU, identity, humanity, self, other and influence. Some students suggested human mandalas, weavings, photography, hand art, paintings and portraits.

The portrait display here is the first installment of their thinking that demonstrates their responses to UBUNTU.  These faces are representations of the people who influence the students and teachers here at VIS. There are mums and dads, brothers and sisters, cousins, aunties and uncles, grandparents, teachers, friends, scientists, lawyers, actors, singers, sports figures, historical heroes and super heroes! In this process, a new vision of this ancient African word has developed…

UBUNTU
In the appreciation of others, we become ourselves.

Sabaidee, Grade 1!

Amazing work on your masks for the Swans and Turtle play. Your dedication paid off on the day! Your imaginings and knowledge about animals helped you create identifiable masks that added to the visual story line of your play.

Exploring clay through the Elements of Art: Focus on Form, Shape and Texture.

Sabaidee, Grade 1!

We are so lucky that we were able to work with clay this term. It is such a treat to mold and fashion hand built creations. Since we are preparing to do a play in Performing Afts that was all about a turtle, we chose to create little turtles out of clay as a keepsake from this time in Grade 1.

First, we explored the different shapes and forms that made up a turtle. We learned new vocabulary words like sphere, semi-sphere, cylinder and cone. we also learned about how to connect clay to clay to ensure the pieces stay together after they dried.

Your turtles were soooooo cute! We had some breakages that Mr Somphong and I fixed with super glue. Easy Peasy! After the first firing, you were all interested in how much the turtles shrank. We talked about the properties of clay and that after firing, the clay can shrink up to 30%. That's a lot!

In the end, we used your turtles to decorate the Grade 2 play on the importance of considering the effects our actions have on a variety of habitats!

Understanding the properties of materials is an important part of Visual Arts. Part 2 - Fairy Hotel

30/11/2015

Sabaidee, Grade 1!

We decided to test how materials work in the elements. After learning about the Fairies from Midsummer Night's Dream, many of you wanted to see if you could catch some of those elusive creatures by creating a Fairy Hotel, equipped with swings, lovely guest rooms and even a swimming pool!

We crafted false windows from old dvd cases and painted beautiful scenes of the inside of the Fairy Hotel rooms. As a group, you decided that the windows, most importantly the paper the paintings were on, were not safe and sturdy materials for outdoor weather.

Then it was time to create a  solution! One of you brought in an old umbrella and we set the task to make it visually pleasing. After hours of painting and creating finger knitted tassels, our creation was complete! Unfortunately, the fairies did not make their presence known. No worries there...we just made our own!! Oops, my poet slipped out...

    Angie Andreas

With a career spanning 25 years, I have worked alongside children from infancy to 9th grade in a generalist classroom setting. To my delight and surprise, an opportunity arose for me to become an art teacher in 2015. My first year was a learning experience and I expect that will be the case with all the years to follow.
